Furnace Noises That Indicate a Problem

It may not feel like it yet, but we’re almost to the end of summer. Before long, you’re going to be relying on your furnace to keep warm. When that happens, you need to be aware of the signs that your furnace might have a problem. One of the most obvious signs that your furnace is in trouble is if it starts to make strange noises. Let’s take a look at some of the more common furnace noises that indicate a need for repair.

Booming

If your furnace gives off a deep booming sound every time it turns on, it means that you have a dirty burner assembly. The burner assembly is the part of the furnace that combusts natural gas to generate heat. Over time, carbon particles created as combustion byproducts will collect on the burner assembly jets. These deposits will eventually become advanced enough that some of the jets won’t ignite on time. When those delayed jets finally do ignite, they’ll burn through the built up gas all at once. That’s what causes the booming sound. Having your burner assembly professionally cleaned should fix the problem.

Short Cycling

Short cycling is when your furnace turns itself on and off every few minutes. It’s caused by air flow into the furnace becoming blocked somehow, either because of a clogged air filter or a malfunctioning air handler. This causes the temperature in the furnace to rise until it shuts itself down to prevent overheating. This constant on/off cycle puts a lot of strain on the furnace, causing parts to wear down and malfunction more frequently. If not taken care of, the problem can shorten the lifespan of the furnace. Call for repairs as soon as you hear this happening.
