Booming
If your furnace gives off a deep booming sound every time it turns on, it means that you have a dirty burner assembly. The burner assembly is the part of the furnace that combusts natural gas to generate heat. Over time, carbon particles created as combustion byproducts will collect on the burner assembly jets. These deposits will eventually become advanced enough that some of the jets won’t ignite on time. When those delayed jets finally do ignite, they’ll burn through the built up gas all at once. That’s what causes the booming sound. Having your burner assembly professionally cleaned should fix the problem.
Short Cycling
Short cycling is when your furnace turns itself on and off every few minutes. It’s caused by air flow into the furnace becoming blocked somehow, either because of a clogged air filter or a malfunctioning air handler. This causes the temperature in the furnace to rise until it shuts itself down to prevent overheating. This constant on/off cycle puts a lot of strain on the furnace, causing parts to wear down and malfunction more frequently. If not taken care of, the problem can shorten the lifespan of the furnace.
