Chances are that when you think of a water heater, you think of the storage tank variety. That was the only kind available to residential users for many decades. However, you might be surprised to learn that modern water heaters offer a variety of different methods for meeting your hot water needs. If you’re in the market for a new water heater, have a look at some of the options available.
Tankless Water Heaters
Tankless water heaters, as you might imagine, don’t use storage tanks to maintain a standing water supply. Instead, they use a heat exchanger similar to a boiler. When hot water is called for, the system activates and heats water as it flows to the destination. When the demand for hot water subsides, the system turns off. This makes it much more energy efficient than standard tank water heater, since it doesn’t have to expend energy in order to constantly maintain a supply of hot water. However, there is a bit of a delay between when you open the hot water faucet and when hot water arrives.
Tank Water Heaters
Just because other water heater types are available, doesn’t mean that tank water heaters are a bad choice. Tank water heaters remain one of the most popular water heater types on the market, in fact, mainly because of the convenience of always having hot water available. Tank water heaters are tough to exhaust with demand, and have high enough capacity to easily supply enough hot water for multiple people. They are slightly less energy efficient, though, since they operate at all times in order to maintain a standing water supply.
