3 Signs That You Need a New Air Conditioner

Old-Air-ConditionerSummers are always hot in Southern California, but these last couple weeks have been record-breaking. Things are unlikely to cool down that much any time soon, so it’s in your best interests to make sure that your air conditioner is able to get you through the hottest months of the year. If it isn’t, you should replace it now before it gives out under the strain. You don’t want to suddenly find yourself without air conditioning in the middle of the hottest time of the year, do you? Call a technician about replacing your air conditioner if it fits the following symptoms.

High Monthly Costs

As an air conditioner ages and wears out, it will gradually begin to lose its efficiency. As the efficiency of the system reaches critically low levels, it will have to operate for longer periods of time to accomplish the same cooling. You may not notice this at first, as it will happen gradually. If you notice your monthly energy costs rising faster than you think they should, though, that means it’s probably time for a new system.

It’s Breaking Down Frequently

So, it’s not that unusual for an air conditioner to break down every few years or so. Things happen, even with regular preventive maintenance. You should start to become concerned if your air conditioner starts breaking down multiple times a year, though. That level of frequency when it comes to issues is often a sign that the air conditioner is getting close to the end of its life. The wear and tear on the various parts in the system is causing them to fail in groups. It will only get worse the longer you insist on using your old system. We recommend replacing it with a new one before it breaks down completely and you have to do it anyway.

It’s 15+ Years Old

Most of the issues that lead to the death of the air conditioner are related to its age. The typical lifespan of an air conditioner is around 10-15 years, after which point it will start to accumulate all kinds of chronic issues that will harm its cost efficiency. As the air conditioner ages, the list of issues will get longer and longer. Eventually, the system will break down completely. Long before it reaches that point, though, it will become more expensive to use than it’s really worth. If your air conditioner is older than 15, we highly recommend that you consult with a professional about when the best time would be to replace it. You might be able to get another year or two out of it, but it’s more likely that you’ll be better off installing an entirely new system now.
