In record-breaking summer heat, an air conditioner that isn’t operating properly isn’t much better than not having one at all. If your air conditioner isn’t keeping your home as cool as it should be, there could be a couple of different reasons why. It’s important that you be able to recognize some of the output symptoms that indicate a problem with your air conditioner. Let’s take a look at those symptoms now.
Refrigerant Leaks
Refrigerant is the core of your air conditioning system. It is the liquid the system uses to transfer heat out of the house during operation. The air conditioner recycles refrigerant during this process, but does not consume it. If a leak develops in the refrigerant line, it will drain the system of the fluid it requires to operate. This will cause a steady decline in output, and eventually a full system breakdown. If you notice fluid dripping from your air conditioner, call for repairs immediately.
Air Handler Problems
The air handler is the part of your system responsible for circulating air throughout the home during operation. In order to compensate for the extreme amount of friction generated during operation, the air handler is equipped with a series of oiled bearings. As the bearings wear down, the friction on the air handler will increase. This will cause the air handler to operate less efficiently, as well as produce a loud grinding sound. If you notice this happening, call for repairs before the air handler can burn out entirely. You don’t want to add to your problems by having to replace the entire air handler.
