Making Sense of Water Heater Efficiency Ratings

Homeowners are becoming more aware of how much energy their home comfort systems use. Choosing energy-efficient appliances, water heaters, and HVAC systems not only lowers utility costs over the lifespan of the system, but it’s also better for the planet.

When it comes to a new water heater installation in Orange County, choosing an energy-efficient water heater offers many benefits. There are many factors to take into consideration for homeowners who want to choose a more eco-friendly water heater. Let’s go over some of these factors along with water heater efficiency ratings so you can make an informed decision.

Energy Efficiency in Water Heaters

A water heater’s energy efficiency is determined by the uniform energy factor (UEF). This rating reflects how much energy a water heater uses and how much energy is used to power the water heater itself.  The higher the uniform energy factor, the more efficient the water heater.

A great way to find an energy-efficient water heater is to look for the ENERGY STAR® rating to ensure superior energy efficiency and performance. Look for water heaters with high Uniform Energy Factor (UEF) ratings and certifications. Generally speaking, the higher the UEF rating, the more expensive the water heater will be.

Here are the minimum UEF ratings for a water heater to earn ENERGY STAR approval:

  • Gas tank water heaters (up to 55 gallons) must have a minimum UEF of 0.81
  • Gas tank water heaters (55+ gallons) must have a minimum UEF of 0.86
  • Gas tankless water heaters must have a minimum UEF of 0.87

Traditional Tank Water Heaters

The type of water heater you choose also plays a huge role in its energy efficiency. Traditional tank water heaters have been the most popular type of water heater in US homes for decades and they are known for their reliability. However, they tend to consume more energy than tankless models. However, that doesn’t mean that energy-efficient options aren’t available if you have your heart set on a tank model.

Tankless Water Heaters

Tankless water heaters are also known as on-demand water heaters because they heat water “on demand.” Because water is heated only as needed, they consume less energy than their tank counterparts. The Department of Energy (DOE) estimates that they can be 24–34% more efficient compared to standard tank water heaters.

Heat Pump Water Heaters

Heat pump water heaters mark the latest in water heater technology. These energy-efficient systems can significantly reduce energy consumption compared to traditional water heaters. Instead of generating heat directly, they work by transferring heat from the surrounding air into the water.

This process consumes considerably less electricity because it moves heat rather than generating it, making heat pump water heaters up to three times more efficient than conventional electric water heaters.
