Which Needs More Repairs: Tank or Tankless Water Heaters?

question-mark-badge

If you’re considering switching from a tank water heater to a tankless model, there are many factors to take into consideration. Most homeowners making this decision consider the upfront cost. Some might consider the long-term savings over the lifespan of a tankless system due to decreased energy usage. But not many homeowners probably go so far as to consider which system will be less costly to repair and maintain over time.

Unfortunately, there’s no simple answer to this question. The frequency of repairs for tank vs tankless water heaters depends on several factors. Mostly, it comes down to how well the water heater is being maintained. Let’s compare the need for water heater repair in Orange County based on tank vs tankless systems.

Tank Water Heaters Pros and Cons

Tank water heaters have a simpler design and fewer components compared to their tankless counterparts. That means there are fewer parts that can experience issues. These units are generally less expensive to purchase and install.

However, tank water heaters have their cons. They are susceptible to hard water deposits which can cause sediment to accumulate at the bottom of the tank, potentially leading to corrosion, inefficiency, and a higher likelihood of repairs. Tank models also have a shorter lifespan of 10–15 years which means they need to be replaced more frequently.

Tankless Water Heaters Pros and Cons

Tankless water heaters heat water on demand which means you’ll enjoy lower energy bills and less wear on the system over time. Because of this, tankless water heaters can last 20 years with proper maintenance. Since there’s no tank, a corroded tank won’t ever be an issue.

However, more complex parts such as electronic sensors and high-efficiency burners can sometimes lead to more issues requiring repairs. Also, tankless systems are more expensive to purchase and install. They also require regular maintenance, especially in areas with hard water like we have here in Orange County.

Comparison in Terms of Repairs

Generally speaking, tankless water heaters require more frequent maintenance due to their complexity and the need to keep the extra components clean and functioning efficiently. Because they have more sophisticated parts such as sensors and heating elements, these can be more costly to repair. Tank water heaters can experience leaks, sediment build-up, corrosion, and anode rod issues.

It All Comes Down to Regular Maintenance

No matter what type of water heater you choose, regular maintenance is key to minimizing repairs for both types. Both types of water heaters have their own maintenance and repair challenges.

If you’re diligent about scheduling maintenance and repair needs, you shouldn’t have to worry about major repairs with a tankless water heater. But if you’re less likely to schedule maintenance, a tank water heater might be the better option for you.
